Part2 - RDS Farm - Collections

Log on to Connection Broker > Server Manager > Select Remote Desktop Services Item> Collections > Tasks > Create Session Collection

Give a name to your first Farm Collection.

Add RD Session Host servers that you want to add to this Collection. I just added 1 server for RDSFarm01.

Add the Active Directory Group you want to allow for this Collection.

I will have only 1 RD Session Host server in this collection and its ok to store user profiles on this server. Therefore I don't enable "user profile disks" for this collection. (I will enable this option on Collection2 to see the difference and test)

Click Create

Click Close when the progress is succesfully completed.

By following the same procedure, I created another Collection named RDSFarm02

Select Collection> Click Tasks> Edit Properties

Under Session Item> By default user profiles are created temporary and deleted on log off> I changed this 2 options to keep user profiles on the server.

User Profile Disks is not Enabled

You can Publish Remote App Programs that are installed on RD Session Host servers. > Collection > Remote App Programs > Tasks > Publish RemoteApp Programs

You can prevent new connections to a server if you need to. This will NOT drop the existing connections.

You can set licensing mode for Per User or Per Device. Select Collections > Tasks> Edit Deployment Properties

You can configure certificates too. I will be configuring certificates in an upcoming post.

And Finally we need to create DNS records. RDSFarm01 collection will have only 1 server, so I create only 1 dns record with name "RDSFarm01".

RDSFarm02 collection, on the other hand, will have 2 servers. So I create 2 DNS records with name "RDSFarm02".

In my RDS Farm, I've already added Connection Broker, RD Licensing, RD Web Access and 2 RD Session Host servers. I created DNS record for the 3rd server (192.168.2.23) but I have not added the server yet. In Part3, I will add a new server to the existing Farm.

Note:

I was wondering what happens if a user use ip address of the Session Host server instead of Farm DNS address. I tested it, nothing changes actually, you can see that active connection on Connection Broker server, you can send messages to the user  or disconnect or log him off.
